Marlins trade Oswalt to Pittsburgh
« on: July 17, 2011, 08:44:58 PM »
Trade is done for obvious reasons on both sides (Marlins acquire assets for future and Pirates get a top 50 SP for our run this year)...

:PIT: sends to :FL:
SP Von Rosenberg, Zack, $0.5m (P-n/a)
MI Valdez, Wilson, $0.5m (2012)
RP Street, Huston, $2.5m (2012)

:FL: sends to :PIT:
SP Oswalt, Roy, $14.5m (2011)
X-SP Oswalt, Roy, Cash Exchanged on Contract (2011), $-12m in 2011

Street's a good reliever, but I have depth there and I can't pass the chance of a healthy Oswalt down the stretch.  Thanks Samuel.

And the Fish confirms  :judge: We were looking to trade Oswalt because we can't afford to re-sign him, we get one of Pittsburgh top prospects, and also acquire the fish new closer Street, and some depth in the lineup... Pittsburgh obtain a top SP to compete this year and also gets under the cap

Thanks for the easy negotations Colby  :toast:

I don't think the Marlins received enough for Oswalt. Rosenberg isn't that great of a tout - 7.00 ERA in A ball, Street is 2.5 mil for a reliever, which is pretty bad considering what you can get in the FA reliever market, and Wilson Valdez is just not a good player.

In normal circumstances I would agree but Oswalt is not completely healthy, he wasn't pitching that great before he got hurt and he is most likely a 2 and a half month rental.  I don't see Oswalt getting more than 8-10 starts for the rest of this year anyway.

Oswalt as of today is showing signs of returning, and even pitching poorly as he has, he still has averaged 40+ points a game on the year (making him very valuable to a team in a playoff hunt - enter innings cap limit argument here). Plus a good majority of his salary is being covered. If the salary wasn't being covered then I have no problem with the deal, but Samuel is taking on money in this deal for this year and next, plus he isn't getting back any real youth or value. We have all discussed that closers are relatively useless in this league, so taking on one at 2.5 mil for this year and next is helping out the Pirates more than it is helping out the Marlins, Valdez is a part time player - and not a good one, and Von Rosenberg is stinking up the joint in A-ball - that is how I view the deal. The possibility of a healthy Oswalt is better than the more costly collection of nothing the Marlins are getting. I don't see the upside here for the Marlins. So I will not approve the deal.
